Recipe – Date and Nut Energy Balls

I’m on a drive to reduce the amount of processed food in my diet. As such, I’m cutting out shop-bought cakes, biscuits, chocolates etc. These little energy balls are packed with flavour and goodness with no added sugar. In addition, they’re gluten free and dairy free. I make a batch every week, and they’d last the week if my fiancé didn’t keep raiding the tub…

Date and Nut Energy Balls

  • date and nut energy balls10 ounces pitted dates
  • 1.5 cups organic gluten-free oats, finely ground up in a food processor
  • 7 ounces of nuts, half finely ground and half roughly chopped (my favourites are toasted hazelnuts, almonds, pecans and brazils)
  • 7 ounces dried fruit, roughly chopped in food processor (cranberries, blueberries, pineapple etc)
  • 2 tablespoons crystallised ginger (chopped up)
  • 4 tablespoons dessicated coconut
  • 2 tablespoons milled linseed (also known as flax seed)
  • 5 tablespoons mixed seeds (I use linseed, pumpkin, sunflower & sesame)
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice

Put the dates into a small saucepan with cold water, bring to the boil, drain and whizz up in the food processor. Mix together all of the ingredients, then shape into balls a bit bigger than a walnut. Place on a baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at gas mark 4 for about half an hour, or until brown(er). Wait for them to cool down a bit before gobbling them.
