I hear the question on the tip of your tongue: “What is this Reiki stuff that you keep going on about, Judith?” OK, so maybe that wasn’t your exact question, but I’m going to do my best to answer it for you anyway.
My Reiki master, Sally Pickard, states that “Reiki is a simple hands-on healing art, brought from Japan to the West in 1938.” You can read more about Sally’s explanation of Reiki here.
So what does that mean? Well, I’ll try to explain by telling you my Reiki story.
Having been in the alternative health field for a few years, I had heard of Reiki. My thoughts was that it was a load of “Eastern mumbo-jumbo”, to quote an old friend. I mean, how could this “treatment” involving someone just holding their hands in different positions on your body actually do anything? Energy medicine? Quackery, in my opinion. At least, that was what I thought until March 2011.
I had just been through a horrible break-up with a boyfriend, and was feeling depressed and devastated. Life was hard. I would never find real love. And, I thought, my broken heart would never heal. Then, one evening, my life changed. I met Sally Pickard, a Reiki master, at a pamper evening. We were both there doing 5 minute taster treatments. She bobbed across to where I was working and said, “Fancy swapping 5 minutes massage for 5 minutes of Reiki?” I didn’t want to appear rude, so I said yes, of course (although I felt that she was getting the better end of the deal). At the end of the evening, I went and gave her a quick shoulder rub, then swapped places so that she could do this Reiki thing. Being the world’s biggest sceptic, I wasn’t expecting much, but I closed my eyes and gave it a chance.
WOW. In those 5 minutes, I experienced a kind of peace and love that completely blew me away. I felt as if some great weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I didn’t know what it was, or how it worked, but I did know something: I wanted more of this stuff!
That was the beginning of one of the most wonderful and fulfilling journeys of my life. I went for regular Reiki treatments with Sally for a few months, and after a few sessions she talked to me about learning to do Reiki for myself. It was a surprise to me to learn that I would be able to give myself a Reiki treatment, every day, once I had completed the First Degree Reiki class.
I still didn’t understand this Reiki stuff, but I knew now beyond all doubt that it was working a very special kind of magic in my life. The broken heart was mending, and life looked so much brighter than it had for a very long time. I saved up my pennies and took the class in October that year. The rest, as they say, is history. Reiki has been working away subtly in my life ever since. I give myself a treatment every morning (well, most mornings), and can’t tell you how much peace, comfort and perspective it gives me. In addition, I don’t seem to suffer with nearly as many aches, pains and colds as I used to! I now also offer Reiki treatments to my clients at Peak Fitness Studio, and have seen some wonderful transformations occur in their lives.
So Judy, why are you telling me all of this? Well, Sally is holding a Reiki class next week, and I wanted to give you the opportunity to gain an insight into what this practice is all about. If you would like to know more about the class, please get in touch with me (firstname.lastname@example.org).
If you don’t feel that a class is for you, but you want to experience the power of Reiki, you can book an appointment with me online at http://judithtownshend.co.uk/book-online-2/
Reiki always heals. We don’t know exactly what it will heal, or how long the process will take, but we can be certain that it will go where it is needed and heal the root cause of your pain.
